After a rude awakening to gunshots in a West Omaha neighborhood and a police standoff, Tuesday the suspect was talking from jail. 27-year old Morris Oltman was arrested after repeatedly firing an AK-47 from his home early Friday morning. Oltman is still at Douglas County Corrections.
He admits he was drunk that night, and Tuesday, he wanted to talk to Channel 6 News for one reason. He had a message for all of his neighbors.
In the wee hours of Friday morning, flashing police lights filled a neighborhood at 129th and Fort. Officers were on the scene after neighbors called 911.
Caller to 911 says, "I just heard probably five more gunshots. I heard about five minutes ago three or four, I think."
For some neighbors, it went beyond just hearing the shots.
Neighbor Laura Ayers says, "saw the man shooting the weapon in the house, it looked liked he was shooting it through the roof."
That man, "Mo" Oltman, has had several days in jail to think about just what he did.
Oltman says, "I fired my gun off and I went back inside and fell asleep."
That gun was an AK-47. Oltman says he has it for fun.
Oltman says, "we like to go shooting, just me and the boys, out on some land. Yeah it's fun, never would hurt anybody."
But Friday morning, a night of self-admitted drunken fun turned into a scary ordeal for neighbors. Oltman says for him it has turned into a life-changing mistake. He faces a felony charge of Terroristic Threats.
"I messed up my entire life that I've been putting together as long as I've been alive in the matter of 30 seconds," says Oltman.
But he wasn't talking Tuesday to talk about himself. His real purpose was to deliver a message to those very neighbors he woke up and scared in the dead of night.
"I just needed to say I was sorry. There's kids in my neighborhood, there's families. I'm sorry," says Oltman.
This isn't the first time Oltman has run into problems with drinking. In 2001 and 2002, he had a minor in possession of alcohol charge. In 2003 and 2006, he had a DUI charge. This latest incident has him facing three charges, including that felony charge of Terroristic Threat.
