An Omaha Police Officer finds himself the target of a gunman. Four shots fired, thankfully none hit five year O.P.D. veteran Oscar Dieguez. Tonight three teens are behind bars, charged with the attempted assault of an officer.
Things are calm this evening at the Sorensen Park Plaza Applebee's, but it was a different story last Saturday night. "The officer did see the person fire more than one shot in his direction." said lt. Darci Tierney. According to police reports, Officer Oscar Dieguez, working security for the restaurant heard one shot fired from a passing car, and then saw the muzzle flash from three others.
Dieguez told investigators he, "...could feel the disturbed air" from the passing bullets.
"We were out here with them like going out to eat." said Sugar Winston. She and her sister Gloria were at the Applebee's earlier in the evening, and is just finding out about the shots being fired at the officer. They say that level of violence is out of place in the Sorensen Park Neighborhood. Gloria Winston says, "Usually it's cool around this area nothing really happens because we live down the street we come around here and eat and go to stuff all the time so it's okay." Saturday night it was not okay, dozens of people running around, shots being fired from a moving car, and Dieguez was in the center of it all. Lt. Darci Tierney says, "He was able to remain calm in the situation and get a good look at the vehicle including the license plate number he was able to relay that to 9-1-1."
Using the information Dieguez was able to give them; officers say they found the shooter's car. They actually followed if for a short distance before they pulled it over at 60th and Laurel. Officers arrested DeJuan Prince, 19, and 18-year-olds Arian Carter and Lashawn Driver for attempted first degree assault of an officer. Channel 6 News checked into the backgrounds of the three suspects and did not find much. Aside from the felony assault on an officer everything is a misdemeanor, alcohol, tobacco, and disorderly conduct.
