Mine (from Otoe County) says "Handgun Purchase Permit". I'm going to have to get a new one in the next couple weeks, so I'll have to see what
the new one says.

I noticed the change when I renewed mine in September of 2007. The previous one said "Handgun." I live in Cass County.

Applied for a new one in Otoe County yesterday. Top of the application did use the word "firearm" instead of handgun. Probably not too big of deal,
these permits are used to purchase all firearms (in lieu of a background check)

I don't know when this change was made, But it has created a problem for some. If you are18, 19 or 20 years old and are otherwise legally eligable to
purchase a rifle or shotgun, you can not obtain a Firearms Purchase Permit until you reach 21.
I am not sure how these persons should proceed... can they still get a NICS check done? Two young men I work with just went through this. One is 21 the other 20. The 20 year old decided to wait until his Bday

you do not NEED a firearm purchase permit to buy a long gun. it is simply easier for the dealers to take that rather than fill out 10 miles of paperwork every
time. At least that is how it was explained to me last time I bought a rifle from a dealer. Juniors could still do it the old fashioned way.

What tyseri said. It just speeds up the process is all when you have one and are buying a long gun.

Yes, my old "Handgun Purchase Permit" that was issued in August of 2005 read "Handgun Purchase Certificate". I live in Sarpy County and got
that permit from the Sherriff's department in Papillion. It expired in August 2008 and I went to the Bellevue Police Department this time to get it
renewed. It was issued in September 2008. This one now reads "Firearm Purchase Certificate". I wonder if they changed the wording on the certificate
in order to condition us that all firearms need a purchase certificate.

When at Cabela's 2.9.09 a customer was purchasing a Long Gun, the salesman asked if he had a firearm purchase permit.
The buyer replied no. Salesman replied, that's OK it just makes the paper work easier. |

They changed it because the ATF checks became a requirement for all guns. It was actually one of the smart things this state has ever done.
You absolutely have to have one to buy a handgun in NE. but you don't need to have it to buy a long gun or shotgun. It makes it easier if you do because they don't have to run the background check. That's the only reason they changed it to "firearm" instead of "handgun". |
