Ashford is at it again |
Lead | |

Today he filed a new ammendment to LB 958, kind of hard to follow. Check it out for yourself: http://uniweb.legislature.ne.gov/FloorDocs/Current/PDF/AM/AM2235.pdf

Thanks for the FYI, Cat.

We will need to move quickly, this could come up as soon as Monday...my guess at the rate things have been going Tuesday but.

Scary thing is... he's concealed his intent enough that this has a chance.

I think we can tweek this to be a net loss for him (at least his intentions) there is enough things in here that could be turned by slight changes, removal of
easily defeated items and addition of some of our wants, and I think that could happen.... I will be writing some suggestions to share.

It doesn't look like he's listening to the masses...
From what I understand the bill isn't dramatically changed, he is merely buttering up the language. |

Did I read it wrong? Does the new amendment eliminate AM 1964 and the AWB Commission? I also saw it messes with the handgun permit statutes and adds a bunch of
off-topic crap like impersonation.

This is bizarre. He's got language addressing identity theft in there now, along with mention of a "firearm owner's identification card."
What is this, Illinois??
Then he wants to repeal those sections of the existing statutes that establish the purchase permit and stipulate which firearm transfers require it without any indication of what would replace them. Or am I just going blind from trying to read this fertilizer?

Asshat at it again | ||
|
Well, I called Senator Kopplin's office this evening to express my displeasure with the numerous changes without public comment. He was still on the floor
but one of his aides and I spoke for about 15 or 20 minutes. An additional issue I wanted to get across was regarding the extension of mental health records
retention without a provision to get off the 'list' and to be able to obtain that information as needed by the individual. I also reminded the aide
that I thought the NSP already was charged with gathering the type of statistics being attempted by the 'good' senator from Omaha. Only time will tell
but I'll get to work on yet another letter this weekend and email early followed by a mailing and perhaps a fax.

Nebraska converts to NICS | ||
|
Upon the effective date of LB958, Nebraska will use the NICS during weekend gun shows. Hint: NICS is down for maintenance on selected weekends. No guns can
be sold that weekend. Ashford isn't this sneaky! Ernie must be running the Judiciary Committee as stated by Governor Heineman.
Check the statutes to be repealed in Sec. 6, the last section of LB 958 and you will understand my deduction. The repeal of these statutes will be a big lose of the shooters of Nebraska. Federal statute will apply when Nebraska's Firearms Purchase Certificate(69-2404) no longer exists.

Based on the form letter response that I got from Sen. Gay in response to my last email
I'm not sure where he stands. He "wrote":
Thank you for contacting me to voice your opposition to LB 958. The Judiciary Committee, of which I am not a member, recently advanced the bill to the full Legislature for discussion. I oppose LB 958 in its original form and will listen closely to the debate on this measure. Again, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
Please do not let him get away with this subterfuge. He is trying to hide an anti-gun bill by calling for a study of crime and how various facets of crime are committed. This is something that a number of law enforcement agencies (NSP, FBI, Justice Dept, BATF, etc) do already. The states money would be better spent on improving the poverty, mental health, and family situations (all are more to blame for crime than guns).
I may sound cynical but I can just see him cherry picking any data that this blue ribbon commission comes up with and spinning it into more anti-gun agenda. If he truly looked at the data available he would see that more guns equals less crime, or he could just read John R. Lott's book and save himself time.
Do not let yourself be lured into voting for this, it is NOT the anti crime bill that he is attempting to pass it off as.
I urge you to OPPOSE this bill.
As always, I stand ready to assist.
Respectfully submitted, |

How can this bill continue to be modified so radically after it has left committee? This is wrong. It should go back to committee if he wants to make
modifications.

I see oppertunities here, working on an ammendment for section 1 that would make this a viable study rather than having a predetirmined outcome, Section 2
creates a hotline, does not require reporting, this could be made into a comprimise measure since it accomplishes nothing. Section 3 I'm still studying.
Section 4 has s everal problems but the increase to 10 years for barring a person adjucated mentally incomitent is not a problem, this could be salvaged.
Section 5 is standard legeslative garbage. Section 6 eliminates the handgun purchase card, this could be a major problem that needs to be fixed. Section 6 is
also where some changes benificial to us could be placed.

What statute adresses recalling an elected senator? Has Ashford gone off the deep end? With his ramblings and subterfuge of this bill, under his amendments HE
would not be able to posess a gun! I wonder what he is doing in the state legislature? With all of these "earmarks" or changes to this bill he
should be sitting on the Demon er Democratic side of the house.

Say, where do I apply for my "firearm owner's identification card"??? I need one pretty badly cause last year I used my CHP at Epley security
for ID and the TSA guy wasn't amused.
Not amused at all. So I need one of these FOI cards right away. |

I received this email over the weekend. Does anyone know if this has been debated yet, or have any updates? Also, please re-contact your Senator & ask them to oppose AM2235 ASAP. Thanks! HIGH PRIORITY - OPPOSE AM2235 Alert: All NE Sportsmen, 2nd amendment advocates. IMMEDIATELY - Forward this email to whomever necessary. Today, Senator Brad Ashford submitted AM2235, which completely guts LB958 and AM1964. AM2235 is now the newest version of LB958. There are five attachments with this email: 1. The original LB958 2. The original AM1964 3. The new original AM2235 4. The legislative agenda for Monday 03/10/08. LB958 is scheduled as 12th item on the list. There is a very good chance the legislature will debate LB958(AM2235), on Monday 03/10/08 , probably in the afternoon. Watch the debate on NETV or your PC. 5. An Excel spreadsheet, which is a living document, which will be updated as time progresses. This spreadsheet is keeping track of the legislative vote on LB958 and also which Senator are Term Limited, Eligible for Re-election and which seats will be open next legislative session, etc. It is imperative everyone READ AM2235, Read either the attachment or go to http://nebraskalegislature.gov/web/public/home Key in 958 and click on AM2235 to read AM2235 from the State Legislature's site. We are opposed to this AM2235. HIGHLY Recommended: Even if you've already written/email or personally called your State Senator to write, call or email them AGAIN. Asking them to OPPOSE LB958 with AM2235 We have the weekend to get this accomplished. If you have not called or emailed your state senator, NOW IS THE TIME. LB958 with AM2235 is totally unacceptable.

OK, well it looks like we may have some more time yet. Just got an email from my senator saying they probably won't get to it today. So, be sure to contact

By my count, they got through all of three bills today (maybe four).
Slow is good. If time becomes an issue, there will be little cajoling on LB958. I keep my hope up that there will be amendment attempts from the good guys. (pre-emption, no gun-free zones, etc.) |

Senator Avery,
LB958 has gone through another transformation right before it reaches the floor for debate, and I find it unconscionable that Senator Brad Ashford has not allowed the public to weigh in on this, after he has totally changed the intent of the bill twice. I know that you are a co-sponsor to the original bill, but this underhanded, self serving, knee jerk reaction of a bill does not deseve to see the light of day. Anyone capable of basic political reasoning knows that this "Crime Commision" is just another way for the Legislature to abdicate it's responsibility. If you have the audacity to attempt to take guns away from law abiding citizens in Nebraska , then at least have the testicular fortitude to say so on the floor during the debate , and not just rubber stamp a "finding" of some trumped up commission. I am vehemently opposed to this bill, and I will actively work to unseat anyone that votes for it. LJUnaTIC District 28 Lincoln, NE BILLY will still ignore me... He is hoplessly anti-freedom
