Seward - Sign, sign everywhere a sign |
Lead | |
|
Passed through Seward yesterday on Highway 15 and noticed they had put up signs on both the north and south approaches proudly announcing the city of Seward bans concealed carry.
I guess they feel safe from the huge threat posed by permit holders now. |

I just came down I-80 today and saw a billboard for Seward. At the bottom of it, it said something like "4th of july city". I laughed at that. What does the 4th of July mean? It means freedom!
Yet Seward doesn't want to allow you to exercise your freedoms. how stupid are they? I'm going to email the mayor and tell them that they should not be allowed to call themselves the 4th of july city. They're disgracing freedom. |

jed, do you have the Seward mayor's email handy? I'd be happy to join you in politely shunning him.

Subject: doing business elsewhere To: sewcham@sewardne.com CC: sewcham@alltel.net Hello, We normally would not take the time and bother contacting you but, we just thought you should know. Seward was a regular stop for our family. We really enjoyed and looked forward to our visits there. My wife and I no longer stop in Seward on our regular trips back and forth to Norfolk. We have shopped in Seward often over the years. We have noticed your signs, and will respect your wishes by doing business elsewhere. As one of many a State of Nebraska, Concealed Weapon Permit Holders: • I have passed state & federal background checks for violent crimes, mental illness & chemical dependency. • I have received and continue to receive training in the law of self-defense & have passed handgun qualification courses. • I am at least 21 years of age. What do you know about your other city patrons? All you have managed to do is inform criminals that Seward is a resistance free zone. Permit holders are some of the most law abiding people you will ever meet. Seward's stance will surly keep us away and criminals could surely recognize this. Those that would do harm could not care less about your signs and unfortunatly we may be the only ones you can count on to respect the city's wishes. Joe Lincoln, NE |

Subject: Re: [Sewcham] doing business elsewhere From: "Jessica Manley" Add Mobile Alert Hi Sir- I have forwarded this message to city hall. I have asked them to look into your concern. It is an issue that has been brought up in the past, as many of our business owners would like to carry handguns in their stores, etc, but are unable to. We hope that this probalem can be resolved. |

Seward's no-ccw ordinance | ||
|
As a resident of Seward, I found it interesting just how quickly those signs went up after Nebraska passed CCW. Today I found out why.
As I was filing for my handgun purchase permit at the Seward Police station, I was speaking to the person there about it. According to them, the no-ccw city ordinance has actually been on the books for a long time, they only posted the signs when they did to make sure everyone knew about it. I had been waiting for years for Nebraska to pass concealed-carry, and was happy when it did. It was aggravating, to say the least, when I found out that my home town had decided to make it locally illegal. I KNOW I'm not the only one who feels this way. I'm eagerly waiting to hear if there will be any chance that the city will reverse it's decision! |

Do not wait. Get others who are interested in getting that changed. Get organized, poll your City Council members to find out if you have any allies, and get
on the agenda. Waiting accomplishes exactly squat. Get a presentation together. Are there any gun clubs or other organizations that might help? Make
presentations there. Make this (@nd amendment rights an election issue. November is coming.

The burning question here is for Seward and Kearney, can't we now legally have concealed weapons in our vehicles? The law states that if a place is posted
you can enter it as long as the gun stays in the car.
I'd love to know the legality of that. |

ram4x4nut wrote: While you are correct in stating that the law says you can keep it in your car concealed on a posted place or premesis, however another rule says that you cannot carry any place where probited by law. Although only a city ordinance it is against the law to CCW in Seward. As JimBob said, you need to get organized and work to get the city to change this. Better yet, also get in contact with your state Senator and express to them that you want the patchwork of CCW city ordinances fixed by including preemption in the Concealed Handgun permit laws. |

By posting the signs, and since Nebraska has no "official" sign, don't they become a "posted" place? If so, then a posted place
can't keep you from having your weapon in your vehicle. I think the signs, at best, weakened their ability to enforce their ordinance.

Quite possible ram4x4, certainly quite possible. Only one way to find out..... And that is someone actually being cited and fighting it in court.
Better yet, as soon as this legislative session is over, lets flood our Senators with requests to add preemption in the Concealed Handgun Permit Act. |

Aren't there new legislators being voted in before next session? shouldn't we wait for the votes to be in?
No doubt the assault weapon known as the "Ruger 10/22″ earned its name from its ability to kill
twenty-two people for every ten shots fired.
