I know an assault weapon is really one with a select fire option but let's address the question regarding the SKS/AK47/M16 style semi-auto rifle. Why did you or why would you buy one of these weapons? Let's not say 'target practice' because we all know there are better choices for this. And try not to say 'to exercise my second amendment rights' because one isn't typically motivated to run out and start their own newspaper just because the first amendment offers freedom of speech.

Posts: 398 (01/28/08 18:11:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I bought my first SKS because it was a cheap semi-auto rifle (I didn't have one yet) that fired cheap ammuntion, and was well known for being very rugged and reliable. This was my perfect description of a "truck gun". It could beaten and banged around, collect dirt, and would still fire. If it ever got stolen, I wasn't going to be out much money. I bought an AR15 because, well honestly, just because all the cool kids had them and they convinced me I needed one too. I bought an AK style rifle in .223 because I wanted a reliable weapon that fired easily accessable ammunition in case of a SHTF event. Also, with a good scope, it makes for a great coyote killer. But the real answer to your question for me personally really is that old cliche answer that I almost hate to repeat, but it is true. I bought these things for the same reason that an auto enthusiast might buy a Porsche or a classic muscle car. I really have no burning need for them, but they are so much fun, and just plain cool. Really, what else can I say?

And since the purpose of our Second Amendment is simply to empower The People in order to keep our appointed government officials from riding roughshod over the citizenry without reprisal should worse come to worst, I felt it wise to be armed in a fashion similarly to those who might become future oppressors, and that was within my budget. So, why did I buy an "assault rifle"? As a deterrent to a government that might benefit from riding roughshod over The American People. ...and also because an AR with a target upper makes a nice Coyote tranquilizer.

For example a judge or lawyer can take all my worldly possesions away with some paper and a pencil, but if they take too much for $75 chrome pistol I can take everything they value in thier life away. It helps to keep them in check.

See, the $200 NFA tax stamp, plus the $20,000+ price tag puts them out of my budget. Now, there are many reasons I own a semi-automatic rifle in an intermediate caliber. The AR and AK-clones are low-recoil. The AR and AK-clones have a shorter range, so my backstop needs are different than with my .30-06s. Primarily, my reasons for owning an AR and AK are the same as the reasons someone would want a Corvette or Mustang. Or a 60-inch plasma TV. Or a big-arse boat. It's my damn money and I will buy what beings me happiness (as in life, liberty, and the pursuit of).

If you buy one, you can convert it to hunt varmint, hunt coyote, hunt deer, compete in silhouette, compete in three-gun, compete in Camp Perry-style events, plink with .22s, hunt elk, hunt bear, hunt any damn thing under the sun, defend the home, compete in .50 cal shoots, hunt black powder (no joke), and almost anything else you can do with a gun (sorry Dan, no shotty sports... yet) .... It's like a Swiss army knife. It is the Leatherman of firearms. It can be a bolt or a semi-auto or a single-shot. It will fire anything from a .22 rimfire to the .50BMG. Just as Gene Stoner intended, there is nothing an AR platform cannot be made to do. I figure it's only a matter of time before some enterprising gunmaker makes a .410 or 16 gauge version ala the Saiga.

I forget the maker. I'm out of the office now, or else I'd look it up. Sorry. If you think of the .458 CheyTac used in the movie Sniper (desert camo pattern) then you'll have the idea.

I don't need a Corvette, or 360 television channels either (or a telephone on my hip 24/7, for that matter) but I have all three. I just love that I live in a place where I can have those things. I would love for the mainstream media to favorably report on the 90 million gun owners who haven't committed a crime, or caused an injury. 'Spose that'll ever happen?
